Loopt Selected as One of 10 "Wireless Entertainment Players to Watch in 2007"

June 17th, 2008

Loopt, a revolutionary social-mapping service that is changing the way people use mobile phones to keep in touch with their friends, has been named one of the 10 wireless entertainment players to watch in 2007 by IDC, the premier global market intelligence and advisory firm in the information technology and telecommunication industries.

In the “10 Emerging Entertainment Players to Watch in 2006,” report issued today, IDC highlights some of the most interesting and pioneering companies in the wireless entertainment sector.

“With its ‘social mapping’ service, Loopt is a prime example of the new wave of data services combining Location-based Services (LBS) with key features such as mobile community and mobile user-generated content, which have become gating factors for data consumption,” said Julien Blin, research analyst for IDC’s Wireless and Mobile Communications.

“IDC research suggests that LBS, social networking/mobile community, mobile user-generated content, and mobile advertising markets should start to experience a fairly significant growth in 2007 and beyond,” Blin adds. “IDC believes Loopt is poised to emerge as a serious player in those respective markets through its consumer-oriented and secure social mapping application and its growing relationships with leading U.S. carriers, media companies, and LBS technology providers.”

The Loopt service is currently deployed on Boost Mobile. Later this year, Boost Loopt will be pre-installed on every one of the carrier’s handsets. Boost customers currently may download Boost Loopt directly from their Java ®-enabled Boost Mobile phone or from Boost LIVE at www.boostlive.com. Loopt will be available on other major U.S. carriers in the near future.

“We are honored to be selected by IDC as one of 10 companies having a major impact on wireless entertainment and driving the adoption of mobile application services,” said Sam Altman, Loopt CEO and co-founder. “As the IDC points out, Loopt goes beyond traditional LBS applications, which may only give users their current location, to instead provide them within array of services, including status messages, friend alerts, mobile journaling, and other on-the-go experiences.”

Unlike other social location services, Loopt automatically updates the location of everyone in a private network of friends and displays that information directly on a map on the phone. Boost Loopt even sends an alert when a friend in the network is near, putting an end to missed connections in the mall, at the movies or around town.

Boost Loopt also protects the privacy of its users by incorporating a variety of safety features and privacy controls. For example, users of the Boost Loopt service can choose who can see their location at any time.

Loopt and CBS Partner to Deliver First Location-Based Mobile Web Advertising in the United States

June 17th, 2008

CBS Mobile and Loopt a revolutionary social mapping and communications service, today announced a milestone agreement to deliver the first location-based mobile Web site advertisements in the United States. Through this partnership, advertisers will be able to take advantage of GPS and other localization technology to reach on-the-go consumers at their physical location, enabling them to target users who are near a particular place of business.

“Location-based advertising is the sweet spot in mobile marketing,” said Cyriac Roeding, Executive Vice President, CBS Mobile. “We are thrilled for CBS to be the first media company in the country to help our clients realize highly relevant, yet non-intrusive mobile ads using location-based technology. Through our partnership with Loopt, our advertisers will be able to deliver targeted messages to potential customers who, based on their location, might be very likely to click or make a purchase. This makes the ads highly relevant to consumers and advertisers at the same time.”

CBS’s mobile sports and news Web sites already produced close to 75 million page views and 5 million unique users in Q4 2007, making CBS Sports Mobile (http://wap.cbssports.com) one of the highest-traffic ad-supported mobile Web sites in the U.S. Today’s announcement broadens the substantial advertising options already available across CBS Mobile WAP sites. As with other CBS Mobile advertising, the location-based opportunities will be available across major U.S. wireless carriers.

“Together with CBS, we are leveraging the growth of the mobile Web and the power of location information to transform mobile advertising into a more integrated and useful service,” said Sam Altman, CEO and co-Founder of Loopt. “If you’re hungry and we take into account your location and time of day to display an ad for a restaurant offering free appetizers during happy hour, we’ve really blurred the line between advertising and content. It’s a win for everyone consumers, advertisers, Loopt, CBS and our carrier and developer partners.”

These location-based ads are not sent via SMS to consumers’ mobile devices, but instead appear non-intrusively on mobile Web sites which consumers can access from their cell phones. Additionally, all such ads are served anonymously and location history is not stored. Ads will be available on CBS Sports Mobile and CBS Mobile News Web sites, on Loopt properties and its partner’s Web sites. All consumer location data used is privacy protected by Loopt and its partners under compliance with industry best practices.

June 17th, 2008

Loopt®, a revolutionary social-mapping and communication service, today announced a powerful third-party developer program designed to bring new location-aware services to Loopt enabled devices.

Launching as a closed beta, the Loopt Developer Program will give developers access for the first time to Loopt’s live location feed so that developers can create new services that leverage location-based capabilities. Loopt plans to work with 15 to 20 projects from developer applicants in this beta and work closely with selected developers to bring these services to market. Another three to four additional projects will be selected for deeper integration into the Loopt service.

“We are thrilled to offer the first live location developer program that ushers in a new generation of context-sensitive mobile services,” said Sam Altman, CEO and co-Founder of Loopt. “If you have a great idea for a location-aware application and want to build it, the Loopt Developer Program will provide the software and infrastructure to create a proof-of-concept product. The Loopt Developer Program further extends the company’s commitment to privacy and security innovation by offering developers the most intuitive and effective location privacy capabilities available today. Loopt’s experience and leadership in managing the privacy and security aspects of live location is unmatched and will further drive adoption of cutting-edge best practices across the industry. Boost Mobile and Loopt Pioneer Social Mapping for Young Mobile Phone Users

June 17th, 2008

Boost Mobile and Loopt today announced the first-of-a-kind location-based social mapping service that enables young mobile phone users to share their location, status messages, photos and other on-the-go experiences with friends from their Boost Mobile phone. Unlike other social location services, Boost Loopt, available to all Boost users on November 20, automatically updates the location of everyone in a private network of Boost customers and displays that information directly on a map on the phone. Boost Loopt even sends an alert when a friend in the network is near, putting an end to missed connections in the mall, at the movies or around town.

Boost Loopt also brings geo-tagging capabilities to a major U.S. wireless carrier for the first time. The service’s journaling feature allows mobile users to “geo tag” locations and captures their experience with friends in their private network.

“Fourteen to 25-year-olds are committed to their social circles and constantly want to know where their friends ‘are at.’ They also comprise the majority of Boost Mobile’s customer base. Could there be a more perfect marriage?” said Craig Thole, director of value added services, Boost Mobile. “We already know that exclusive pay-as-you-go services, such as Boost Walkie Talkie, have proven to be very sticky with our customers and we expect Boost Loopt to see similar interest on our network.”

Boost Mobile is offering Boost Loopt to its customers with java-enabled handsets for free through the remainder of 2006. Starting January 2007, Boost Loopt will be offered on a Pay-As-You-Go basis for $2.99 per month with the first 30 days free. Beginning November 20, Boost customers may download Boost Loopt directly from their Java ®-enabled Boost Mobile phone or from Boost LIVE at www.boostlive.com.

Boost Loopt also protects the privacy of its users by incorporating a variety of safety features and privacy controls. For example, users of the Boost Loopt service must give permission allowing others to have access to their location. For more information about Boost Loopt safety tips, terms of use and privacy notice, visit www.loopt.com.

“The young and social subscribers of Boost are the perfect audience to inaugurate this new and innovative service,” said Loopt founder Sam Altman. “Boost’s tagline asks the question ‘Where you at?’ And now Loopt’s social mapping service can answer that question for every Boost Mobile user.”

Today, Boost Mobile and Loopt announced the launch of Boost Loopt with a major event in New York City’s Times Square. At the same time they kicked off a promotion which, beginning November 20, gives Boost subscribers and others in the New York City metro area the ability to win daily prizes including, but not limited to tickets to Knicks home games, consumer electronics, music, movies, concerts and much more. Over the six week period, these New York Boost subscribers and other entrants will encounter approximately 130 random event invitations listing the times and locations of where the Boost Loopt Market Manager will appear.

Boost Mobile customers can use Boost Loopt to connect with their friends and locate the Market Manager, in order to claim the daily prize. Winners will be selected based on their ability to get to the event invite location first with a friend and demonstrate that they have Boost Loopt service on their phone. The promotion is available to U.S. residents and includes a national sweepstakes overlay. For more information about the promotion and sweepstakes, and to sign up or obtain a copy of the official rules, www.boostmobile.com. Boost Loopt will also be promoted via a multi-million dollar marketing campaign that commences this month on cable television and other national outlets.

The Boost Mobile agreement is the first major partnership for Silicon Valley-based Loopt, which was founded last year by Sam Altman while he was a student at Stanford University.

“We love being a part of a service that leverages our premier neighborhood map data to help people connect better,” said Steve Zuckerman, Director of Mapping & Data Operations at Maponics. “Innovators like Loopt have the foresight to incorporate customer-driven features like neighborhood searching and we’re pleased to have been chosen as part of their solution.”

Loopt is currently available on Boost and Sprint Nextel with more carriers coming soon.
