Title Metrics Engineer
Location Mountain View, CA
Job Information

At Loopt we are constantly looking at the numbers to guide our business and product decisions. Join our team and help build our next generation of analysis and visualization tools.  Our metrics platform spans all our multiple client platforms and our server components. It’s built using some of the hottest new technologies like MongoDB and Node.js to ensure efficient operation.

Our metrics engineers do a variety of system engineering tasks to maintain the infrastructure, UI building to create new visualization, and data analysis to support ad hoc requests.

Experience:

  • Scripting: Collecting all the numbers requires an orchestrated collection of scripts running on several different machines. At a minimum you need to understand basic scripting concepts and be able to read scripts written in any combination of Javascript, Ruby, Python, Bash, and PowerShell.  You must be able to write new scripts from scratch in at least one of Javascript, Ruby, or Python.
  • Linux / Unix Experience: Most of the systems you’ll work on are Linux based so you can’t be frightened by the command line. You don’t need to be a Unix coding wizard by any means, but you need to be comfortable using things like ssh, scp, and piping between commands.
  • HTML, CSS, & Javascript: Most of our visualizations are done within our in-house metrics site and these will be one of the primary things you’ll be working on. You will need to be comfortable extending this system on your own by adding new pages and modifying existing ones.
  • Node.js: We’re using Node.js for a number of our tools so previous experience with this is a plus, but not a requirement given how new the technology is.
  • Intepreting Business Requirements: A big part of this job will be to construct adhoc queries and reports based on requests from the executive team. You must be comfortable talking to the executives to gather their requirements and then translating those into appropriate reports. Complex statistical analysis is generally not required but you should be able to work with our in house experts to implement such analysis when it is needed.
  • SQL: A portion of our data must be queried from SQL based data sources. You must be comfortable doing queries and joins. Deep experience optimizing stored procedures is not a requirement. There will be some SQL work but not an overwhelming amount so a basic understanding is acceptable. Deeper experience is a plus.
  • 2+ years working on professional or personal projects that involve these technologies. Experience with building internal web based tools is preferred.

Title Senior/Lead Web Developer
Location Mountain View, CA
Job Information

Loopt is building some earth-shaking new projects for 2011 and is dramatically expanding our web presence.

We seek a creative and motivated web developer to push the limits of the desktop and mobile web.

Experience:

  • Modern Web Frameworks: You understand why these matter, how they help, and what they don’t do. You know when to use Rails and when to use Rack. Our primary platform is Rails, although we dabble in others. You’ve built sites using one or more of Rails, Django, ASP MVC, Grails, AppEngine, or Express and you’ve read through the documentation on some of the others. You choose between these platforms based on their merits and not based on your familiarity.
  • Service Integration: Stitching RESTful services that speak JSON to XML spewing SOAP services with a few custom binary protocols thrown in both sounds painful to you and you can explain in an objective way why that sort of an architecture might not be a great idea. That’s not what we do, but if we did you could handle it. You can write SQL queries when you have to, but have several strategies to avoid them.
  • JavaScript: Client-side javascript is a must-have. Experience using major libraries such as jQuery, script.aculo.us, dojo, YUI, or Ext JS is great, but we also design and build our own code. Explaining the difference between prototype inheritance versus class inheritance can’t frighten you nor can closure optimization or client side performance debugging.
  • HTML and CSS: Layout and styling must be second nature. While you’ll usually be working from a wireframe or a full visual mockup, not having them won’t cause you to produce an ugly result. You’re a software engineer not a visual designer, but you can tell the difference between good design and bad design. That we target a range of browsers across both mobile and desktop platforms is pretty much a given.
  • SEO: You don’t have to be a marketing person, but you know that how we structure and display our content matters. You’re comfortable bending a site architecture to the needs of the marketing team and can work together with them to optimize our site.
  • Team Player: You’ll own your own work, but all of us edit each other’s code. You recognize that there’s more than one way to do most tasks. When your teammate does something differently than the way you would have, you see potential for you to learn rather than an automatic need to admonish. At the same time, you’re willing to share your knowledge and mentor others to help us all get better at what we do.
  • Systems Administration: The ops team keeps it running, but you have to deploy it. Configuring production Linux servers with new versions of our current or future technologies is no problem for you.
  • 2+ years working on professional or personal web application projects. Additional non-web related programming experience is a plus but not a requirement.
